Jean-Guy Mathers was an ambitious and passionate businessman. He dedicated his life to building an empire to be passed on to his children. He imagined many great projects for the city of Saint-Eustache, which he will cherish throughout his life.

BIRTH OF JEAN-GUY MATHERS

It was on September 4, 1928, in Montreal, that Jean-Guy Mathers was born into a modest and happy family. He grew up surrounded by his 4 brothers and sisters, Normand, Claude, Huguette and Denise. He was married over 65 years to Juliette Renaud and saw the birth of 12 children and had 16 grandchildren when he died in 2018.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE FIRST HOUSE

Jean-Guy Mathers began his career as a builder in 1951 by building houses, mainly in Saint-Eustache-sur-le-Lac, now the city of Deux-Montagnes. Sold for $ 7,900 each at the time, the houses were part of the first project of what would become the Mathers Group.

SAINT-EUSTACHE QUARRY

Ten years after real estate development, the Project of a Lifetime is taking shape as construction of highways 640 and 13 begins, partly on land owned by Jean-Guy Mathers. He then took the opportunity to start the Carrière Saint-Eustache and thus provide the raw material for the work in progress.

1961

SAINT-EUSTACHE PAVING

Proud of the success of his career, Jean-Guy Mathers sets out to transform the rock he extracts from the enormous quarry himself and thus the paving plant is born out of the land he owns. It then offers a whole new service to entrepreneurs and surrounding towns.

1966

SAINT-EUSTACHE DRIVE-IN

Far from lacking inspiration, Jean-Guy Mathers, passionate about cinema, developed the idea of ​​a drive-in on the land adjacent to the Saint-Eustache quarry. Driven by his love for movies, he opened the Ciné-Parc Saint-Eustache, a most modern venue with heaters and sound systems to hang on cars, in addition to offering delicious popcorn!

1971

SAINT-EUSTACHE
FLEA MARKET

Seeking to use the Ciné-Parc site during the day, Jean-Guy Mathers imagines developing the Flea Market. Over time, he added parts to make it the largest indoor and outdoor flea market in Canada, to this day.

1977

SAINT-EUSTACHE SPORTS CENTER

Always motivated by excellence, Jean-Guy Mathers decided in 1980 to build the Sports Center, which opened its doors in 1981. Equipped with a swimming pool, a muscle training room with the latest equipment and numerous tennis courts, the Sports Center is a quality place to gather. It was sold in 1990 and bought back in 1995. It was part of the Mathers Group heritage until it closed in 2020.

1981

SAINT-EUSTACHE CINEMA

Always so passionate about the big screen, Jean-Guy Mathers is building his own cinema in Saint-Eustache, right next to the Ciné-Parc site. The cinema offers a total of 12 rooms and displays in its lobby a large assortment of neon decorations, all related to movies. Jean-Guy Mathers takes advantage of his cinema to go watch movies himself several times a month. The cinema was sold in 2008 when it contained 16 screens.

1997

Spa Ciel Nordique

Jean-Guy Mathers' big dream, the Ciel Nordique Spa comes to life in a wing of the Sports Center. With the trendy equipment, its pool giving the impression of being bottomless and its large structure of white marble, the Spa is majestic and dazzles as soon as you see it. The only one to offer the snow cabin, a unique concept in Canada, the Spa is the best place for relaxation. It was closed and dismantled in 2020.

2013

O-Puces-Pocus

Always looking for new opportunities, the daughter of Jean-Guy Mathers, Brigitte, president of the Mathers Group since well before the death of her father, decides to set up a children's amusement center in a section of the Flea Market. Hoping to attract young families and wanting them to take advantage of their visit to do some shopping, Ô-Puces-Pocus is born.
